About the event

Spray & Slay: A Hip-Hop Artventure with Angelina Villalobos!

Get ready to unleash your creativity in an exciting art class! Join us for a unique experience where you'll not only master the basics of spray paint safety but also dive into the vibrant world of color and stencil art.

Inspired by MoPop's current show, "Contact High: A Visual History of Hip Hop," our designs are geared to spark your artistic flair. Led by the talented Seattle Muralist, Angelina ‘179’ Villalobos, this class is more than just learning – it's an opportunity to immerse yourself in the dynamic art of spray painting.

Discover the joy of wielding a spray paint can with confidence, delve into the secrets of color theory, and unleash your creativity onto a canvas. By the end of the class, you'll proudly walk away with a unique piece of art, framed and ready to hang – a testament to your newfound skills!

We've kept the class size limited to ensure an intimate setting. This not only fosters a supportive and engaging environment but also allows Angelina to provide hands-on, personalized guidance to every participant. All supplies are included, so come and create something extraordinary

TIMELINE / ITINERARY

6:00 - 6:16: Introductions + Social Meet and Greet for Participants

I really want people to get to know each other and to talk and support each other during the class. So during this time I want them to check-in, get a nametag, introduce themselves to me and get them situated with a little pack of supplies for the class. I also want to hide a golden ticket in one of the packs. If the person says something bad about themselves, someone else can call them out and they get the ticket taken away by the caller-outer. End of the night, whoever has it wins a 179 Coloring book. Also sign photo releases for Loubaba.

6:15 - 6:30: Explanation of Project

We explain what we’re doing and we answer any preliminary questions. We also see where people are in their knowledge of the project and see if we can team people up that may need support or encouragement.

6:30 - 7:00: Trial and Error / Learning Curve / Test Run Stencil

This is the test run. This is where we figure out how to use an Xacto, how to apply the spray adhesive, and basic spray paint safety. We can also test colors to see what we might like for our final canvas. We should also make people aware of healthy borders so they don’t put their design where it might get covered by the matte board.

7:00 - 7:45 For real deal Canvas:

Now that students have had a test run of what to expect they can use their new knowledge to paint their final canvas for the frame. We can help them along, but mostly this is where we can talk about other things, see how people are feeling and encourage them. I really want people to walk away from this class feeling good about themselves and thinking of themselves as ARTISTS.

8:00 - 9:00: Social Hour + MadeSpace Shopping + Selfies

Everyone takes pictures with your work. End of the night everyone gets a gift bag from all the hosts and a discount code from my online shop. People can stay and talk about art and follow up questions.
